The so-called Sports Illustrated cover jinx strikes again. Philadelphia Little Leaguer and star pitcher Mo'ne Davis was pulled against Las Vegas, Nevada, after giving up three runs, including a two-run homer, in the semifinals of the Little League World Series Wednesday night.
Davis and her teammates trailed 3-0 when she moved to play first base. She had six strikeouts but gave up six hits and one walk in 2 and 1/3 innings. Since she only threw 55 pitches, Davis will be eligible to pitch Saturday if Philadelphia advances to the championship game.
Davis is the first Little League player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, although like many before her, including New England Patriot Tom Brady, had a poor performance after the magazine was released. Philadelphia lost 8-1 and will play Chicago Thursday.
Davis won't be available to pitch in that game because of pitch-count rules. The winner advances to the U.S. championship against Las Vegas. Davis remained upbeat after the loss.
