Florida School Grades Published

TALLAHASSEE (by Rick Flagg and Alan McBride/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- State education officials have released the latest grades for elementary and middle schools in Florida.
The grades were released Friday, and they show that and 962 of the elementary and middle schools here... more than 36 percent... earned an "A."
But Deputy Education Commissioner Juan Copa says 178 schools ended up with an "F"... 70 percent more than last year.
But Copa said those schools would be getting help from the state in order to boost their scores for next year's testing.
"The department is focused on ensuring all low-performing schools are [provided the necessary assistance and support they need to help their students achieve," he said.
If those failing schools don't improve, however, they can be taken over by the local district, converted into charter schools or closed down for good.
