FCAT Scores Released

TALLAHASSEE (by Rick Flagg and Alan McBride/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- The latest batch of scores from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, are out.
The figures, released Friday, show 8th and 10th graders are doing better on the writing test.
Education Commissioner Pam Stewart says that's a good sign because this is the last year for FCAT and they're gong out on a positive note.
"I am very pleased that our students are making steady progress as we continue to transition to more rigorous standards," she said.
But the FCAT scores also show there are thousands of third graders who might have to repeat the year.
Two hundred thousand of them took the exams.
Roughly 19 percent of the third graders taking the reading test failed it; about 18 percent failed the math exam.
