Report: Boating Accidents Killed 62 in Florida Last Year

(by Alan Spector/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- You are being reminded to not only be cautious on the roads this Memorial Day holiday weekend, but also on the water.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has issued its Boating Accident Statistical Report, which shows that 62 people were killed in boating accidents in Florida in 2013 and there have been 11 deaths so far this year.
The commission listed the top 11 counties for boating accidents last year.  They are:
  • Miami-Dade
  • Monroe
  • Palm Beach
  • Broward
  • Pinellas
  • Lee
  • Brevard
  • Okaloosa
  • Collier
  • Duval
  • Hillsborough
According to the commission, the leading cause of these accidents is crashing into another boat or an object.  It's recommended that boaters have someone keep watch of their surroundings.
The leading cause of fatalities on the water is drowning.  Everyone on board a boat should wear a life jacket.
