I-75 Crash Kills 3, Including FHP Trooper and Tow-Truck Driver
OCALA (by Alan Spector/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper, a tow-truck driver and a bystander were killed while working an earlier crash on I-75 on Saturday afternoon.
There had been a two-car wreck on southbound I-75, near Southwest County Highway 484 at MM341 in Marion County. The two cars were on the shoulder, along with Trooper Chelsea Richard, the truck driver, John Duggan; and one other, George Robert Phillip.
That's when a seven-car pileup happened in the same area, after which a southbound pickup truck went onto the shoulder and hit Richard, Duggan and Phillip. Richard and Duggan were both pronounced dead at the scene. Phillip, 52 and from Ocala, later died at Ocala Regional Medical Center.
Trooper Chelsea Richard was 30 and a nine-year veteran of the Highway Patrol. Duggan, from Levy County, was 57.
The FHP is investigating the second multi-vehicle crash and trying to determine why the driver of the pickup veered off the road.
