Proposal to Raise Speed Limit to 75

TALLAHASSEE (by Rick Flagg/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- Two state lawmakers want Florida to increase the top speed on the highway. State Senator Jeff Brandes of Saint Petersburg is one of the sponsors of a bill that would bump the maximum speed up to 75 miles per hour. He says people are already going that fast, so it might as well be legal.

"Most people aren't driving 70, they're driving at a range they feel comfortable in and our goal here is to really adjust speed limits to basically where everybody is really driving and that's in the 70 to 75 mile an hour range where it's safe."

Other states like Texas and Utah have gone even higher, but Brandes says he wants to take things gradually.

"There was some discussion about going to 80 but for us, I think 75 is where I feel comfortable."

The bill will be debated by state lawmakers in the spring. The last time Florida raised the highway speed limit was 1996.
