Florida Execution On Tap This Evening in Starke

STARKE (by Alan McBride/FLA. NEWS NETWORK)  -- Florida is scheduled to execute another death row inmate.
Barring any last-minute appeals or other interventions, Darius Kimbrough is to be put to death late today for the rape and murder of an Orlando woman 22 years ago in her own apartment.
According to case records, Kimbrough was convicted of breaking into the apartment, raping the woman, and beating her to death.
A combination of DNA and eyewitness evidence led to that conviction, and the defense has filed appeals that question both.
According to motions filed by Kimbrough's attorneys, an eyewitness who placed the defendant at the apartment complex the night of the death was elderly and had shown memory lapses.
The defense has also questioned the DNA evidence, and whether Kimbrough may have been the real killer.
Earlier appeals, including one founded on whether the Kimbrough's punishment fit his crimes, have been turned back.
If the most recent motions are shot down, Kimbrough will most likely face execution this evening.
