(WASHINGTON) -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called Egypt's military leader on Monday in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the countries, after just last week, the U.S. cut military aid to Egypt.
Hagel's call to Gen. Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi was tied to the end of the Eid al-Adha holiday. The pair further discussed the importance of the relationship between their two nations.
Another topic of conversation in the phone call was regional security, particularly in the Sinai region. Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said, in a readout of the call, that both Hagel and el-Sisi remained committed to strengthening and advancing the relationship between the U.S. and Egypt.
