Man Who Killed Bears' Fan in Jax Gets Life in Prison
JACKSONVILLE (by Laura Noland/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- Matthew Hinson, 29, will spend the rest of his life behind bars, after being convicted of killing a Chicago man visiting to watch a football game.
Police say in October 2012, Hinson became enraged when he saw William Pettry, a 42-year-old married father of three from Chicago, speaking to Hinson's wife.
Pettry and a friend had come to Jacksonville to watch the Chicago Bears play the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to police, Hinson slashed Pettry's throat and calmly walked out of the restaurant. He was arrested a short time later as he pulled out of the restaurant's parking lot.
Hinson pleaded guilty to second degree murder in May and was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Jacksonville media reports that Hinson told the court he was drunk during the attack and didn't know why he killed Pettry. Hinson's attorneys claim he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism after serving in the Navy.
